Our Federal Government client is seeking to engage a Policy Coordinator on a contract for 7 months contract, option for extension.
**Position Overview**
The Policy Coordinator will work in a multidisciplinary, cross agency team to translate complex technical information on climate and natural hazard risk into clear and concise policy advice. The Policy Coordinator will be required to understand the needs of various decision makers across a range of temporal and spatial scales, and communicate these with DEPARTMENT stakeholders to ensure technical outputs meet decision maker needs. The Policy Coordinator may be required to undertake analysis to support short term relief and recovery efforts in response to specific natural disaster events, as well as to support longer term risk reduction efforts.
The objective of the service is to bring together data on Australia's built, natural, social and economic environments with information on climate and natural hazards to develop a national picture of exposure, vulnerability and risk of natural hazards. To support this, the Policy Coordinator will work with the Team Manager and other stakeholders to:
- Undertake research, consultation and policy analysis to identify and respond to issues and opportunities relating to climate and natural hazard risks.
- Understand the capabilities across the DEPARTMENT partnership and coordinate multidisciplinary teams to deliver outcomes and products aligned with decision maker priorities.
- Develop high-quality advice, briefing materials, correspondence, submissions and reporting to assist decision making and influence external activities/programs.
- Develop, implement and evaluate policies, projects and operational procedures both within and outside of the DEPARTMENT.
- Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders and represent the DEPARTMENT at cross-agency meetings and forums.
- Procure and manage consultants and contractors for priority projects.
The Policy Coordinator will be required to comply with all DEPARTMENT work, health and safety policies and procedures, and take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by their conduct. They will also have to demonstrate commitment to APS Values, Employment Principles, Code of Conduct and the Bureau's Social Justice Strategy.
**Knowledge & Skills Required**
Mandatory
- Demonstrated experience in policy development, implementation and/or evaluation
- Excellent ability to identify and solve complex policy problems
- Experience in program or project management
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
- Demonstrated stakeholder management experience
- Exceptional organisational skills and disciplined work approach
- Ability to adapt to changing demands and priorities
Desirable
- Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline
- Experience working in climate and natural hazard policy or risk assessment
- Exposure to emergency services and disaster management
- Australian Government Baseline security clearance or willingness to acquire (at the DEPARTMENT' expense)
