About the Role
We’re looking for a proactive and strategic Media & Advocacy Specialist to join our Strategic Communications team. In this senior position, you will shape and implement media and advocacy initiatives to support Council objectives. This includes managing daily media interactions, addressing long-term issues, and building strong relationships with media outlets at all levels. Your expertise will be key in fostering a media-savvy culture and offering guidance to the CEO, Mayor, and Councillors.
Key Responsibilities
As the Media & Advocacy Specialist, you'll lead the creation and execution of media strategies that align with Council priorities. Your role involves building and maintaining effective media relationships, responding to media inquiries, drafting press releases, and organising events to ensure balanced representation of Council services. You'll also monitor media coverage, coach Council staff on best practices, identify trends to inform advocacy efforts, and work closely with internal clients to craft strategic communication plans.
About You
You are a seasoned media relations professional with a strong sense of political awareness and the ability to simplify complex topics. Your background includes managing media inquiries, developing strategic communication plans, and speechwriting. With exceptional interpersonal skills, you excel at building solid relationships with senior leaders and media contacts. Self-motivated and detail-oriented, you thrive in fast-paced environments and handle tight deadlines with ease.
