About the branch
The **Physical Metrology branch** leads the development, maintenance and dissemination of Australia’s peak physical measurement standards. We provide the traceability assurance that measurements made in Australia are accepted internationally. The branch is an active participant in international measurement forums. Through the delivery of a range of calibrations and other measurement services, branch staff share their expertise with Australian and international stakeholders. This includes support for research, process improvements, product optimisation, and better measurement practice across the economic landscape.
About the Pressure standards team
The **Pressure Standards team** develop and maintain Australia’s measurement of pressure and vacuum, delivering calibration and consultancy services from internationally recognised state-of-the-art laboratories. Our activities are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities, as well as through regular review by international peers. The group provides key services to the health & safety, oil & gas, defence and aerospace across Australia. We have a wide range of R&D underway to develop and validate new standards and automated calibration systems to support emerging needs in the Hydrogen economy and Defence.
The position reports to senior scientists and engineers who will provide you with the training and support to use the full range of your scientific and practical skills to deliver real outcomes and impact to Australian industry and the community.
- Have the ability to work independently and to take responsibility for delivering outcomes, responding constructively with flexibility and adaptability to evolving needs and when under pressure.
- Consult and collaborate with others, and actively develop relationships both within the team and with external stakeholders. Communicate well and overcome barriers to sharing information.
- Communicate with a broad demographic of clients and stakeholders using clear explanations, evidence and fit-for-purpose communication to optimise outcomes against expectations.
- Demonstrate aptitude to the timely scheduling of external client calibration requests, and internal administration and maintenance in accordance with quality assurance requirements.
- Have a flair for using the full range of your physics and engineering skills to critically evaluate and validate measurement results and associated measurement uncertainties using different techniques.
- Demonstrate familiarity with the operating principles and limitations of a range of relevant measurement instrumentation.
- Demonstrate ability to quickly and effectively detect and manage problems with complex apparatus.
- Be committed to generation and maintenance of accurate records, improving quality processes and familiarity with digital record management systems.
**What you will do**:
Working with the leading researchers in the field in Australia, you will:
- Deliver timely, high-quality calibrations of pressure and vacuum sensors etc., under an ISO 17025 quality system, and at the highest levels of accuracy achievable internationally.
- Liaise with clients and manage routine calibration workflows, including management and timely resolution of problems.
- Maintain efficient operation of the laboratory, including by monitoring equipment calibration status, arranging calibrations in a timely manner, and keeping records accurate and up to date. Utilise and enhance the laboratory’s quality system.
- Under direction, use your broad physics and engineering skills to contribute both to the design and development of new standards facilities as well as maintenance and efficiency improvements to existing systems.
- Contribute to the ongoing research and development activities of the group as required.
