The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The **Communication and Engagement Branch** in the Social Cohesion and Multicultural Affairs Policy Division supports Ministerial engagement with communities, including culturally and linguistically diverse communities; and coordinates the Department’s national engagement with communities. The Branch also designs and delivers strategic communications to promote Australia’s social cohesion, in support of priorities for Australia’s social cohesion into the future.

The **Community Engagement (National Coordination and Reporting)** section coordinates Ministerial and Departmental engagement with communities throughout Australia. The section leads the national coordination of the Department’s Community Liaison Officers, providing strategic direction for their engagement with communities in their States and Territories.

**About the roles**:
There are several exciting and diverse opportunities at the APS6 level in the Community Engagement section of the Communication and Engagement Branch. The role involves policy and program work in the priority area of social cohesion and multicultural affairs.

The Communication and Engagement Branch is recruiting for APS6 Policy and Program officers in Canberra. We are looking for people with a genuine interest in multicultural affairs and Australia’s social cohesion. We seek policy and program officers who have the ability to pick up new concepts quickly, think strategically, have excellent writing and stakeholder liaison skills and communicate clearly. We are looking for good team players who want to work in a supportive, challenging and fast-paced environment.

**Key Duties**:
Depending on the role, the successful applicants may be required to:

- Support the identification and research of current and emerging policy issues
- Support the development and analysis of policy options and recommend solutions to policy problems
- Develop and maintain productive working relationships with a range of policy, program, community engagement, communications, legal, financial and other colleagues within the department and across the whole of government
- Assist in drafting high quality ministerial submissions and briefs, including contributing to NSC and Cabinet submissions
- Support the coordination of ministerial roundtables and the coordination of the Community Liaison Officer Network
- Support the planning and delivery of Harmony Week.
