**The Role**

The primary purpose of the Career Medical Officer (CMO) is to provide independent, high level medical care, including responsibility for the assessment, investigation and initial management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department and admitted to inpatient wards. The CMO will be supervised by specialist staff, and provide supervision and support to junior medical staff in the Emergency Department.

[For approved training sites: The position also serves to support the completion of the Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) or Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD) through the Australian College of Emergency Medicine]

Prince of Wales Hospital and Community Health Services is a major teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, providing excellent healthcare to south-eastern Sydney and specialist health and medical services to NSW.

We have 450 inpatient beds and almost 3,000 staff. Each year we care for more than 64,000 patients in our Emergency Department.

Our hospital is affiliated with various Universities and premier medical teaching facilities which enables our staff to provide excellence in healthcare in conjunction with our commitment to quality clinical teaching and leading medical research.

The Emergency Department

Our Emergency Department is a 24-hour emergency service that cares for adults over 16 years of age who have a serious illness or injury and need immediate treatment. We aim to provide the best care possible to all patients who visit our ED. We use the NSW Health triage system to ensure we are treating those with the most urgent needs first.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
- Advanced ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team.
- Advanced organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self education.
- Demonstrated competency in clinical skills including advanced life support with ability to perform ALS procedures (including endotracheal intubation and insertion of central lines, arterial lines and intercostal catheters), interpreting patient history, physical examination, pathology, ECG and radiological investigations to diagnose simple and complex Emergency Medicine presentations.
