**About us**
The Legislative Council is the Upper House of the NSW Parliament. It is a House of Review, and acts as a check and balance on the Executive Government. The Department of the Legislative Council supports the activities of the Upper House, including its sittings, committee inquiries, protocol and corporate responsibilities. It also undertakes communication and engagement activities to inform and educate the community, as well as key internal and external stakeholders.
The two principal areas of the Department are the Procedure Office and the Committee Office. Following a restructure, a third temporary office - Bicentenary and Corporate Office (Black Rod) - has been
created for a two-year period.
The Department is accountable to the President of the Legislative Council, who is elected by the members of the Upper House. Department staff also work in collaboration with the Department of the Legislative Assembly and the Department of Parliamentary Services to ensure the effective running of the Parliament.
Department staff strive to provide exceptional services to our key stakeholders, including the President, members and their staff, government agencies, stakeholders in committee inquiries, members of the public, and visitors to Parliament.
**About the position**
We are seeking two highly motivated, efficient and experienced professionals to join our vibrant and dynamic Department as Principal Council Officers (Clerk 9/10) in the Committee Office.
Principal Council Officers within our Committee Office are responsible for a committee inquiry as inquiry managers. This typically involves working with a small team to organise committee meetings, review submissions, arrange hearings and site visits, research and write reports, and provide advice to members of parliament.
We may also have other vacancies coming up within our Procedure Office and/or Bicentenary and Corporate Office, with the talent pool from this process potentially being used to fill those opportunities.
Principal Council Officers in the Procedure team support the sittings of the House. This involves preparing procedural material for sitting days, conducting research and analysis of parliamentary procedure, law and protocol and maintaining records. On sitting days, staff also perform duties as a Clerk at the Table within the Chamber, and work may be sessional.
Principal Council Officers in the Bicentenary and Corporate Office support the Usher of the Black Rod in their protocol and ceremonial duties. This can include assisting in duties associated with the sittings of the House, as well as contributing to strategic planning and representing the Department on governance committees.
We are a hardworking and high performing organisation committed to improvement and excellence. We value those who hold a passion for the democratic process and an interest in understanding how it works in New South Wales, along with a desire to work in an environment where impartiality is key.
