**The Role**
The APS 6 Deputy Director Nature of Service will:

- Coordinate the nature of service (NOS) assessments to determine the appropriate classifications for new ADF operations.
- Prepare ministerial and other high-level correspondence, briefs and submissions relating to NOS classifications for current and emerging ADF operations.
- Support as directed the regular reviews of all current ADF operations.
- As directed, monitor operational reporting to identify any issues that may affect the NOS classification of ADF operations.
- Undertake research in response to submissions from claimants regarding the NOS classification of past ADF operations and prepare briefs and submissions as appropriate.
- Respond to requests from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs concerning nature of service.
- Maintain effective relationships with Defence, with other government agencies and with other stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development of NOS policy for current and future ADF operations.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of procedures and practices to support achieving organisational objectives.

**About our Team**
**Where**:

- The position is within Military Strategic Commitments, ADFHQ, in a small team responsible for the nature of service (NOS) classification for all ADF operational service and reviews of the classification of past service.

**Role**:

- Deputy Director has responsibility for the coordination of all tasks and review actions in Nature of Service Directorate. This will involve completing detailed research in the role and leading small teams and stakeholder consultation to complete tasks. Understudying the Director NOS in order to fulfil the role at times and supporting larger tasks is routine.

**What**:

- A NOS classification ensures that ADF personnel deployed on operational duty, within specified operational areas, receive suitable and equitable conditions of service (COS) and become eligible as appropriate for veterans’ benefits delivered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. NOS does not determine medallic entitlements.
- Have ability to work in a small team, be a self-starter and use initiative.
- Be able to conduct detailed research into both current and past ADF operations from resources within and external to Defence, analysing sensitive issues and recommending solutions within the relevant legislative and policy framework.
- Have demonstrated high quality writing skills.
- Have experience in understanding ADF operations and the threats to ADF personnel on those operations, or willingness to learn.
