**The Role**
Defence Science & Technology Group (DSTG) provides dedicated Science & Technology (S&T) support to Special Operations Command (SOCOMD) in order to provide S&T advice, undertake novel concept exploration, contribute to capability developments, and support the adoption of new technologies by SOCOMD units.
As Special Operations Science and Technology Advisor - Fairview (SOSTA-Fairview) you will join a team of Special Operations (SO) S&T Advisers operating under the direction of the Senior Science Advisor Special Operations Command (SSA SOCOMD).
You will work closely with both the Special Operations Futures, and Modernisation communities (SO HQ), to coordinate and lead S&T support activities focussed on the exploration of future concepts and technologies that will enhance SO capabilities across a range of science and technology domains. SOSTA Fairview will also function as Deputy Scientific Advisor Special Operations Command, standing in for the SSA on an as required basis.
SOSTA-Fairview will be required to work collaboratively with SO HQ staff and SOCOMD unit personnel, DSTG S&T Program Leads and S&T capability staff, as well as other government agencies, academia and industry to identify opportunities and deliver enhanced capability outcomes for SOCOMD.
The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to the following:
- Provide a local point of contact (in support of SSA SOCOMD) for SOCOMD S&T interests, planning and support.
- Provide line-management and supervision for five SOSTA Team (S&T5) personnel, supporting day-to-day team administration.
- Undertake regular/routine engagement with, and reporting to, the CSOCOMD client as part of the SOSTA network
- Work closely with SO HQ personnel to identify and evaluate opportunities, and prioritise S&T support requirements.
- Generate task plans and work with SO HQ and/or DSTG to secure the necessary resources to achieve the required outcome. This may also include engagement with academia and industry partners through contract mechanisms.
- Provide SO HQ with enhanced S&T reach through regular engagement and exploitation of national and international S&T communities on SO-relevant technologies.
- Work with SSA SOCOMD to capture and incorporate SO SP S&T requirements and priorities into the wider SOCOMD S&T Program Plan.
- Building a lasting trust-based relationship between DSTG and the Special Operations community.
- Travel interstate and overseas to participate in national and international collaboration activities in support of SO HQ objectives.

This position sits within a small team of Program-focussed LJW staff that coordinate the work of a much larger group of scientists, technologists and engineers across DSTG. You will be working to SSA SOCOMD who is looking for a cornerstone member to join the team to champion critical work elements for SO HQ.
The applicant will ideally have one or more the following:
- Demonstrated deep knowledge, experience and expertise in at least one science and technology domain relevant to Defence Capability - examples include artificial intelligence, advanced sensor and weapons technologies, unmanned and autonomous systems, communications and electromagnetic warfare. Dynamic personnel with a broader scientific and technical skillsets may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; including demonstrated ability to engage with and convey complex scientific concepts to military and civilian personnel with a range of skillsets and backgrounds.
- A strong and proactive interest in emerging threats and technologies, leading-edge military capabilities, and/or wider technologies applicable to SOCOMD.
- Experience transitioning technologies from concept to prototypes (and into service), and a demonstrated drive to progress ideas into systems in the hands of the operators - i.e. from “concept to capability”.
- Familiarity with the DSTG Client Program, structure and capabilities, and an understanding of existing DSTG processes used to progress S&T support.
- Relevant exercise or operational experience(s).
- Previous experience leading (or supporting) the test and evaluation of ADF-relevant technologies.
