**The Role**
An opportunity exists for a Science & Technology (S&T) 5 Facility Manager and Materials Researcher position within the Multifunctional Materials STC within Platforms Division (PD). The Integrated Composites Facility (ICF) is a complex group of specialised laboratories and workshops that provides PD with a critical capability in materials research for Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and Defence.

The ICF underpins DSTG’s ability to provide leading edge composites research for the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and is used by a diverse workforce comprising full-time staff, technical contractors and academic researchers. A strong commitment to workplace health and safety (WHS) is essential for the ongoing operation of the ICF and ensuring a safe and functional workplace.

As the ICF Facility Manager you will have overall responsibility for the safe and effective operation of this specialist facility and key responsibilities in ensuring the ICF maintains compliance with the WHS requirements specified by Commonwealth law and policy including chemical safety, plant safety and Standing Safety Orders.

The role will be critical to contributing to maintaining a positive, inclusive and respectful culture within diverse and multi-disciplinary teams (gender, cultural, age, religious and sexual diversity). The position is also expected to maintain an active research program that will require a time commitment.

The work environment will involve:

MAT is primarily concerned with the deployment of materials in ADF platform and weapon systems, but also supports National security. Our staff and partners provide diverse expertise in materials (functional and structural), advanced manufacturing & processing, advanced sensing, and computational materials modelling. Materials is a rapidly changing, enabling capability for a wide range of Defence challenges.

To ensure impact, the culture in AM is very collaborative, both within DSTG and the broader S&T ecosystem. MAT’s STCs cover many aspects of an ADF Platforms life cycle - from modelling & experimentation to support both acquisition and capability enhancement, manufacturing and support for sustainment during operational life, through to planned withdrawal.
- Demonstrated knowledge and considerable experience in the safe operation and management of research laboratories containing hazardous chemicals, industrial equipment and complex chemical and mechanical processes.
- Strong track record in applied experimentation within a chemical or materials discipline.
- The ability to liaise and develop trusted relationships with a diverse work-force to resolve short and long term solutions to ensure the safe day to day running of a complex research facility.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to develop good lines of communication in both management and research environments.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to represent an organisation at a national level.
