Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Team Lead plays a pivotal role in offering guidance and assistance to both staff and residents. This position exemplifies key work practices and establishes the tone for each shift. The Team Lead serves as an advocate for residents, addresses complex or sensitive issues, responds to medical emergencies, including overdoses, and ensures a safe and inviting space for a vulnerable population.

The responsibilities of this role are shaped by the needs of our residents and housing initiatives. Below are the primary duties associated with this position.

Key Responsibilities

In the absence of the Site Supervisor, Team Leads are accountable for the site, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of both staff and residents. They promote a cooperative team environment that emphasizes effective communication and personal development. Team Leads are tasked with managing incidents supportively and de-escalating situations as necessary. They ensure that appropriate measures are taken and conduct debriefs with the team and residents when required.

Resident and Program Support:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of resident support plans in collaboration with the Site Supervisor and support team.
  • Conduct wellness checks.
  • Support residents with daily activities, including room maintenance and the cleaning of vacant spaces.
  • Facilitate appropriate applications and referrals.
  • Maintain comprehensive files for each assigned resident.
  • Assist with laundry services and oversee on-site laundry facilities.
  • Encourage residents in developing independent living skills.
  • Stay informed about relevant laws and regulations affecting residents, such as the Mental Health Act and Human Rights legislation.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations and uphold a calm environment.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, including providing basic first aid for minor injuries.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations and other professionals as needed.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the shelter/housing site, ensuring safety for all in the absence of the Site Supervisor or Manager.
  • Collaborate with the team to engage residents effectively, employing a team-oriented approach.
  • Ensure timely completion of room inspections and follow-ups.

Organizational and Site Responsibilities:

  • Provide genuine and inspiring leadership and support for both the team and residents.
  • Delegate tasks and ensure daily responsibilities are fulfilled.
  • Address maintenance issues, including plumbing and leaks, while adhering to safety protocols.
  • Report maintenance needs promptly following established procedures.
  • Assist in gathering statistical data for reporting purposes.
  • Be aware of critical incident reporting procedures and adhere to all health and safety policies. Collaborate with the OPS Occupational Health and Safety team to maintain a safe working environment and report any staff injuries appropriately.
  • Comply with all OPS policies and ensure staff adhere to safety protocols.
  • Understand and follow the cooperation agreement with local law enforcement and liaise with community resource officers as necessary.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Understanding of current social issues related to homelessness, mental health, and addiction.
  • Training or knowledge in non-violent crisis intervention and harm reduction strategies.
  • Familiarity with available services for families and residents.
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating initiative and creativity.
  • Capacity to engage positively with individuals, families, and community contacts.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Aptitude for working in a demanding and dynamic environment.
  • Effective personal boundary-setting skills.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 30 lbs and navigate stairs for extended periods.
  • Capability to kneel to assist during medical emergencies.
Educational Background

Education:

  • Diploma in a relevant human or social services field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of two (2) years of recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Working Conditions/Compensation:

Shifts: Full-time, three 12-hour shifts (36 hours/week), primarily during night hours.

Compensation: Competitive hourly wage, with additional compensation for night shifts.

Benefits: Vacation accrual and eligibility for a comprehensive employer-paid benefits plan, including health and dental coverage, following the probationary period.
