The First Nations Identified Cancer Care Nurse role offers a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people with a cancer diagnosis.

This position provides support, information, and care navigation for patients with a particular focus on remote communities within Far West Local Health District.

  • Work in collaborative partnership with existing FWLHD Cancer Services staff, Aboriginal Health Services (e.g., Maari Ma) and Primary Health Care providers and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, Elders and Traditional Owners.
  • Provide leadership that facilitates ongoing development of clinical practice reflecting the McGrath Model of Care.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement culturally appropriate cancer care services for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care coordination and support.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with local health services, Aboriginal organizations, and community groups.
Requirements:
  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. (A genuine occupational qualification under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW).
  • Current registration as a Registered Nurse with AHPRA, with relevant post-registration qualifications and/or at least 3 years' experience working with patients with cancer.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and maintain positive relationships with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Ability to critically use patient clinical information to manage and navigate care, provide information and education to patients and carers, and escalate clinical concerns.

About The Role:

The First Nations Identified Cancer Care Nurse will work closely with the Cancer Services team to develop and implement culturally appropriate cancer care services for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
