Senior Military Strategist Role

This is a critical function within the Military Strategic Commitments Division and ADF Headquarters, providing strategic information activities, engagement and targeting support to enable management of strategic and reputational issues.

The position involves drafting guidance and advice based on strategic Defence policy and intent, as well as managing and coordinating direct liaison with multinational strategic organisations and national operational agencies.

The ideal candidate will have strong verbal and written communication skills, be able to analyse complex technical information and synthesise it into logical, plain English advice for Defence seniors and Ministers.

A key aspect of the role is coordination of multilateral military-military engagement on behalf of Defence senior leadership, as well as development of information activities strategies and guidance to support management of strategic-level issues.

This is an excellent opportunity for a high performing officer with a background in policy to join the team and contribute to shaping Defence's strategic direction.

  • Key responsibilities include:
  • Management of strategic effects and targeting for Defence senior leadership;
  • Coordination of multilateral military-military engagement on behalf of Defence senior leadership;
  • Development of information activities strategies and guidance;
  • Coordination and synchronisation of information activities across Joint agencies and Whole of Defence;
  • Management of the ADF Parliamentary Program.

The successful candidate will have a professional, team-focussed approach, with strong liaison and stakeholder management skills, and the ability to operate in a dynamic workplace environment.

About Our Team

We are a highly motivated team working together to provide strategic support to Defence senior leaders. Our team provides critical functions within Military Strategic Commitments Division and ADF Headquarters.

The MSE Branch provides support to the operational and strategic levels through preparation of strategic information activities, engagement and strategic targeting support. This enables management of strategic and reputational issues in order for Defence Senior Leaders to appropriately engage with government, other agencies, allies, coalition partners and also the Australian and international communities.

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Draft guidance and advice based on strategic Defence policy and strategic intent.
  2. Manage and coordinate direct liaison with relevant multinational strategic organisations.
  3. Manage and coordinate direct liaison with relevant national operational and strategic agencies.
  4. Develop information activities strategies and guidance to support management of strategic-level issues.
  5. Coordinate and synchronise information activities across Joint agencies and Whole of Defence.
  6. Manage the ADF Parliamentary Program.
