About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Homelessness Intervention Specialist to join our team in Fitzroy. As a key member of our Housing Mental Health Pathways Program, you will play a vital role in preventing individuals from being discharged from hospital into homelessness.

This is a permanent part-time opportunity based on 68.4 hours per fortnight. The successful candidate will engage with people experiencing or at risk of homelessness while they are an inpatient at the psychiatric inpatient unit and work collaboratively with patients, hospital staff, and community supports to develop an appropriate housing support plan.

As a specialist in housing-focused assessments and advocacy work, you will ensure clients are linked with suitable housing and support following discharge from hospital. You will also assess clients' needs, offer housing assistance, and make referrals to local agencies as required.

We value lived experience, diversity, and commitment to ending homelessness. Our ideal candidate will possess a tertiary qualification in social work, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, or other relevant allied health discipline. They will have significant experience in the social welfare sector working with consumers with complex mental health needs and an understanding of social policy/consumer support frameworks.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds/abilities. They will be well-developed in organisational, task prioritisation, and time management skills and hold a valid Victorian driver's license.

Key Selection Criteria
  • A tertiary qualification in social work, nursing, psychology, occupational therapy, or other relevant allied health discipline.
  • An understanding of the mental health service system including clinical and non-clinical services.
  • Demonstrated understanding of housing and homelessness policy, context, and systems.
  • Significant experience in the social welfare sector working with consumers with complex mental health needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
