Public Health Medicine Consultant Role and Responsibilities

The Public Health Medicine Consultant will provide public health and clinical medical expertise in the identification and management of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and other emerging public health issues. The role involves coordinating outbreak investigations and interventions, collaborating with Aboriginal health staff and community-controlled health organisations to design programs that reflect local priorities.

Responsibilities include managing notifications of infectious diseases and addressing conditions prevalent in the region, such as rheumatic heart disease, leprosy, melioidosis, and flaviviruses. This position places a strong emphasis on Indigenous health, remote service delivery, and cross-disciplinary collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team.

The consultant will be based in Broome and work closely with the Public Health Manager to support the health of the Kimberley population. Opportunities will also arise to engage with local health services and contribute to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal communities.

To be successful in this role, candidates must possess unconditional general and specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia, fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine (FAFPHM), or recognised equivalent. A willingness to apply for a Medicare Provider Number is also essential.
