Internship Opportunity

Human Rights Watch is seeking two interns for the Sydney office. The ideal candidate will be available for a minimum of two days and maximum of three days a week, for three months beginning in mid August 2024 through October 2024. The internship is flexible, and the possibility to extend exists.

As an intern, you will be offered a range of tasks that cover elements of the work carried out by both the Advocacy and Development and Outreach Departments. You will focus on projects surrounding domestic and international issues of Australia. Throughout the internship term, you will have the opportunity to participate in the collegial atmosphere of all aspects of daily Sydney Human Rights Watch office activities. When possible, you will be invited to join weekly HRW staff meetings, online meetings with global development colleagues, and to attend external HRW events, which could include donor meetings, receptions, or public briefings.

Responsibilities:

As an intern, you will have a variety of tasks across both Departments, including:

  • Conducting background desk research and fact-checking;
  • Assisting with preparation of published materials, e.g. op-ed, dispatches, press releases and daily monitoring of news and current affairs;
  • Monitoring press coverage and updating lists;
  • Assisting with outreach tasks regarding human rights in the Asia region, with a particular focus on Australia;
  • Using databases and supporting with tasks relating to event planning; and
  • Other projects may be assigned as they arise and when they match your interests.

Qualifications:

You must be a currently enrolled student for the duration of the internship. This position is best suited for individuals interested in interning in a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. You should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable with a strong interest in international human rights. Experience with fundraising, media, social media, government relations, event planning, and Salesforce would be beneficial. Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office) are strongly preferred.

Expenses: You will be reimbursed up to $15 per day you are in the office for lunch and up to $20 per day you are in the office for transportation. You may be able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships may offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, and interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials. You should check with your individual academic institutions for requirements.
