Human Rights Watch (HRW) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to defending human rights and holding abusers accountable. We are currently seeking two interns for our Sydney office.

The successful candidates will be part of the Advocacy and Development and Outreach Departments, working on projects related to domestic and international issues in Australia. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in human rights work and contribute to the efforts of HRW.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducting research and fact-checking tasks;
  • Assisting with the preparation of published materials, such as op-eds, dispatches, press releases, and daily news monitoring;
  • Monitoring press coverage and updating lists;
  • Supporting outreach tasks related to human rights in the Asia region, with a focus on Australia;
  • Using databases and supporting event planning tasks;
  • Other projects may be assigned based on the intern's interests and skills.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled students who can commit to a minimum of two days and a maximum of three days per week for three months;
  • A strong interest in international human rights and a willingness to learn;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database management;
  • Familiarity with fundraising, media, social media, government relations, and event planning would be beneficial;
  • Valid work authorization in Australia for the duration of the internship.

Compensation:

Interns will receive a daily allowance of up to $15 for lunch and up to $20 for transportation. Additionally, students may be able to arrange academic credit for their internship experience.

What we offer:

As an intern at HRW, you will have the opportunity to participate in weekly staff meetings, online meetings with global colleagues, and external events, including donor meetings, receptions, and public briefings. Salary: The estimated salary for this position is AU$45,000 - AU$55,000 per year, based on a 35-hour workweek and a 3-month internship period.
