This is an opportunity for data governance professionals with strong accounting and data management capabilities to work within a small team of professionals, driving positive change during a period of organisational transformation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and implementing data governance strategies to ensure quality financial reporting and outcomes.
  • Establishing finance data management practices across complex and sensitive data assets.
  • Leading the planning, acquisition, storing, cataloguing, destroying and archiving of finance data throughout its lifecycle.
  • Optimising processes and championing data quality to resolve complex issues.
  • Establishing networks to drive improvements in financial reporting and accounting outcomes reliant upon high-quality data.
  • Collaborating with data professionals, business stakeholders and IT specialists to drive system changes that enable strategic goals.
  • Captaining data managers and contributing to developing data management capability, including representation at cross-domain forums.
  • Supporting the development of financial systems projects to improve business processes and overall outcomes.

About Our Organisation

Our organisation aims to become a more data-informed entity by establishing a continuous improvement culture. This involves creating high-quality data to provide relevant information to decision-makers. We're strategically directing our approach through the Defence Data Strategy, which includes the implementation of One Data Defence (1DD) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) capabilities. These require Defence Groups and Services to catalogue data sets, undertake remediation and enrichment, and implement improved data governance and management practices.

We've adopted a federated data governance model, representing a 'hub' and 'spoke' structure. The central hub is the Data Division under the Chief Data Integration Officer (CDIO), while Finance Group's central spoke is the Directorate of Financial Information Management (DFIM). This decentralised approach ensures flexibility for Defence Groups and Services to accommodate their needs.

DFIM oversees finance data assets, overseeing standardisation, coordination, and foundational data management practices. We facilitate data sharing, maintain data quality, establish curated datasets and integrated warehouses, and support analytics and business intelligence teams. Our Melbourne-based team operates as part of Victoria Barracks.

As a capable problem solver with strong data management skills, you'll identify and respond to stakeholders' needs to achieve Defence outcomes. You'll lead a team, set priorities, communicate effectively, manage workflow and resources, working in a dynamic environment.
