Aboriginal Peer Worker Job Description

This role is an integral part of a service providing proactive community support for Aboriginal people with suicidal ideation and or crisis.

  • To work collaboratively with individuals and groups including consumers, carers, the multidisciplinary team and other stakeholders
  • To provide tailored assertive support and care to consumers consenting to peer support in the community
  • To work in community outreach and/or providing community support in people's home environments and/or drop-in centres

Key Requirements:

  • Evidence of a current unrestricted drivers' licence and the ability to maintain
  • Ability and willingness to drive/travel as the role requires

We are seeking an individual with a strong understanding of the suicide prevention sector and the ability to utilise appropriate suicide prevention supports such as safety planning, managing risk. The ideal candidate will have personal lived experience of a suicidal crisis, mental distress and recovery, and be able to meaningfully and purposefully use lived experience to provide peer support to people at risk of suicide.

The successful candidate will have a minimum qualification Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (consumer) and established links with their local Aboriginal community.
