Senior Scientist in Charge of Virology

We are seeking a Senior Scientist to lead our Virology Section in the Microbiology Laboratory. The successful applicant will provide expert clinical virology pathology services for NSW Health and justice systems.

The role leads a team that values respect and integrity, with an emphasis on teamwork and excellence in line with organisational values. Our network of pathologists is supported by scientists, technicians and support staff who provide timely and accurate results to inform patient treatment.

Responsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the Virology Section in the Microbiology Laboratory. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the Section, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the Section, human resource, business and resource management.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage scientific, technical and support staff
  • Oversee testing and associated activities and logistics
  • Maintain quality, cost and operational integrity of the Section
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services
  • Develop and implement new virological diagnostic assays or processes
Requirements:
  • Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification
  • Customer-focused approach with well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks and quality systems
  • Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
  • Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems and Quality Management Systems

Qualifications and Skills:
