Join NSW Health Pathology as a permanent full-time Senior Hospital Scientist in Charge of Section - Virology. The role leads the Virology Section in the Microbiology Laboratory at Westmead Hospital and provides expert clinical virology pathology services for NSW Health and justice systems. NSW Health Pathology operates more than 60 laboratories and about 200 collection centres across NSW, conducting over 60 million tests per annum. Our network of pathologists is supported by scientists, technicians and support staff who provide timely and accurate results to inform patient treatment. We encourage staff involvement in research and innovation. The Forensic & Analytical Science Service provides independent analysis to the NSW criminal and coronial justice systems.
What You Will Be DoingResponsible for the management of scientific, technical and support staff, all testing and associated activities and logistics for the Virology Section in the Microbiology Laboratory - NSWHP, Westmead Hospital. The position oversees the quality, cost and operational integrity of the Section, regulatory compliance and accreditation of laboratory services in the Section, human resource, business and resource management.

- Bachelor Degree or higher degree in Science/Medical Laboratory Science or an equivalent qualification, with subjects relevant to pathology, microbiology and virology/molecular microbiology from a recognised tertiary institution
- Customer-focused approach with well-developed interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication, including the ability to communicate with customers, patients and clinical and laboratory staff, report writing, statistical evaluation of scientific data and the ability to effectively communicate policies and procedures
- Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of accreditation frameworks, relevant standards and quality systems
- Demonstrated managerial skills with experience in laboratory operations, administration and budgeting
- Advanced knowledge of Pathology Laboratory Information Systems including supervision of electronic-based Quality Management Systems
- Extensive high-level knowledge of working within the relevant section of the laboratory with knowledge of operation and maintenance of analytical equipment in a pathology laboratory
- Sound understanding of legislation, policies and requirements that impact the laboratory environment including work health and safety and privacy requirements
- Advanced knowledge, skills and experience in virology and molecular biology, including quality control systems and data analysis, cell culture systems and techniques and whole genome sequencing, with demonstrated ability to develop, scientifically evaluate and implement new virological diagnostic assays or processes
