About the Role

The Frontyard Mental Health Program is a unique initiative aimed at providing holistic care and support to young people aged 12-25 years who are experiencing complex mental health issues. This role plays a crucial part in addressing the gaps in service provision and ensuring that no one falls through the cracks.

As a Mental Health Advocate, you will work closely with various stakeholders, including St Vincents Hospital, the Northwest Public Health Network, Orygen, and area mental health services to develop and maintain partnerships and working relationships. Your primary objective will be to facilitate referrals to more appropriate services and provide non-clinical, supportive care to young people in need.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for peer support and a desire to make a real difference in the lives of young people. If you have a relevant qualification in peer work, youth work, community development or similar, and/or experience in peer mental health work, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support by fostering hope and inspiring young people to engage in support and support planning to achieve their goals.
  • Collaborate with Frontyard staff to co-facilitate programs aimed at increasing the skills and capacity of young people accessing the service.
  • Deliver education from a lived experience to young people to better understand and navigate service systems, support options, and increase the capacity of the organisation to respond to the needs of young people.
  • Participate in advocacy around collective issues at an organisational, community, and/or leadership level.
  • Co-facilitate the delivery of events for key dates across the annual calendar.

Requirements:

  • A relevant qualification in peer work, youth work, community development or similar, and/or experience in peer mental health work.
  • A lived experience of mental health services, preferably in Victoria.
  • An understanding of the key issues affecting people with multiple and complex needs, including mental ill health, homelessness, disabilities, alcohol and other drug issues, health and safety issues, and social connection.
  • A strong commitment to recovery-based practice.
  • Knowledge of homelessness and other community services for young people.
  • An understanding of the requirements for ensuring child safety.
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft programs.

Benefits:

  • The opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people.
  • A chance to work with a diverse range of stakeholders and develop meaningful relationships.
  • A supportive and collaborative team environment.

Others:

Please note that this role requires a valid driver's license and the ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
