Cultural Heritage Native Title Specialist

Steelmaking coal is a vital component in blast-furnace steel production, used to create steel for critical infrastructure worldwide. Anglo American operates five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin and has joint ventures in coal, manganese, and copper exploration projects in North West Queensland and Western Australia.

The role of Cultural Heritage Native Title Specialist is crucial in managing Aboriginal cultural heritage and native title matters for Australian operations, aligning with corporate policies, regulatory requirements, management plans, and agreements.

As a specialist in Aboriginal cultural heritage and native title, you will provide strategic advice on policy, processes, and statutory requirements, ensuring the successful implementation of cultural heritage and native title agreements.

You will work closely with Traditional Owners, internal and external stakeholders, including government departments, to develop strong relationships and provide timely and constructive high-level advice to site teams on cultural heritage management and awareness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide recommendations on Aboriginal cultural heritage and native title management as business requirements and stakeholder expectations evolve.
  • Advise site-based teams on the implementation of Cultural Heritage Management Plans/Agreements.
  • Liaise with Traditional Owner groups in conjunction with relevant stakeholders.
  • Lead negotiations for Aboriginal cultural heritage and native title agreements.
  • Coordinate Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys and clearances.
  • Monitor and support Cultural Heritage Management Plan/Agreement review requirements.
  • Advise sites on native title agreements, claims, and compensation matters.
  • Collaborate with the Social Performance team in developing Reconciliation Action Plans.

Requirements:

  • Broad understanding of State and Commonwealth regulatory environments and Coal Mining practices.
  • Significant experience in cultural heritage and native title matters.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Cultural Heritage and Native Title legislation.
  • Tertiary level qualifications or extensive work experience in a related field.
  • Experience in the mining industry within Queensland is desirable but not mandatory.
