About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as a Chief Advisor Major Hazard Facilities. This is a critical role that requires a deep understanding of safety-in-operations and the ability to analyze complex data to formulate effective recommendations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assessing and Licensing: Assess major hazard facility license applications and prepare licensing recommendations and conditions for the regulator's decision-making on applications.
  • Providing Specialist Advice: Provide specialist advice and services to industry and operators of MHFs on hazard identification, safety assessments, safety management system implementation, emergency plans and safety cases in fulfilment of their obligations under Chapter 9 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011.
  • Leading and Coordinating: Lead, coordinate and participate in whole-of-government teams that plan, prepare, and conduct safety audits of major hazard facilities and occasionally other complex facilities holding hazardous chemicals.
  • Providing Technical Information: Provide technical information, expert advice and interpretation on hazardous chemicals storage and handling, especially on the application of sound engineering principles, relevant Australian Standards and industry best practice approaches to reduce the risk so far as reasonably practicable (SFARP).
  • Investigating and Providing Advice: Investigate and provide specialist advice for the assessment of major incidents, near misses and complaints, including the agency's response to community-sensitive events involving hazardous chemicals.
  • Providing Specialist Advice to Local Authorities: Provide specialist advice to local authorities and State Government agencies on the siting of Hazardous Chemical Facilities and appropriate land use surrounding Hazardous Chemical Facilities.
  • Developing and Implementing Programs and Policies: Assist in the development and implementation of programs and policies for the regulation of major hazard facilities under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation 2011.
  • Developing and Delivering Guidance Material and Training Programs: Participate in the development and delivery of guidance material and training programs on the regulatory, administrative and technical requirements of hazardous chemicals storage and handling.
Requirements
  • Education and Qualifications: An undergraduate degree and/or postgraduate qualification in Chemical Engineering/Engineering, Applied Science, Science or related field, including the completion of at least one year of chemistry.
  • Driver's License: Successful applicants must have, or be able to acquire, a current driver's license.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in Industry or Regulatory Work: Experience in industry or regulatory work in the management of hazardous chemicals.
  • Experience Working with Safety Management Systems: Experience working with safety management systems at a hazardous chemical facility will be highly regarded.
