About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Safety Specialist to join our team at the Office of Industrial Relations QLD. As a key member of our Major Hazard Facilities unit, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety of workers and the public associated with the processing, handling, and storage of bulk hazardous chemicals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Assessment and Advice: Conduct thorough assessments of major hazard facility license applications, providing recommendations and conditions for the regulator's decision-making process.
  • Specialist Advice and Services: Offer expert guidance to industry and operators of major hazard facilities on hazard identification, safety assessments, safety management system implementation, emergency plans, and safety cases.
  • Safety Audits and Investigations: Lead, coordinate, and participate in whole-of-government teams that plan, prepare, and conduct safety audits of major hazard facilities and other complex facilities holding hazardous chemicals.
  • Technical Information and Expertise: Provide technical information, expert advice, and interpretation on hazardous chemicals storage and handling, including the application of sound engineering principles, relevant Australian Standards, and industry best practice approaches.
  • Incident Response and Investigation: Participate in investigations and provide advice for the assessment of major incidents, near misses, and complaints.
  • Regulatory Support: Assist in the development and implementation of programs for the regulation of major hazard facilities under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation 2011.
  • Training and Guidance: Participate in the development and delivery of guidance material and training programs on the regulatory, administrative, and technical requirements of hazardous chemicals storage and handling.
