The Aboriginal Cultural Support Specialist plays a pivotal role in Child Protection, working closely with practitioners to promote cultural awareness and understanding among Aboriginal children and families.

This vital position requires strong relationships with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and community services organisations to drive self-determination reforms for Aboriginal children, families, and communities.

As an expert in cultural expertise and guidance, the specialist supports child protection practitioners in the cultural planning process and ensures compliance with cultural plans.

This critical role enables Aboriginal children to maintain their connection to community, build resilience, and stay connected to family. The specialist will also focus on area improvement and implementation processes, aligning outcomes to relevant divisional policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Engaging Others: Providing child-centred and family-focused relationship-based practice that incorporates the family kinship groups and community in maintaining a child's cultural connection and identity.
  • Leading and Inspiring: Leading family, community, and stakeholders through the cultural plan process and decision-making in an open, informed, proactive, positive, and assertive manner.
  • Delivering Results: Evaluating and delivering cultural plan improvements by working with colleagues and key stakeholders to identify opportunities, develop solutions, and overcome barriers to continuously improve cultural plans.
