About the Scholarship

The Zema Energy Studies Scholarship is a world-class PhD program that aims to develop the nation's future energy leaders. The scholarship is established in memory of AEMO's founding CEO, Matt Zema, and is designed to support the next generation of leaders to meet Australia's energy sector challenges.

Research Areas

The scholarship provides funding for research in various areas, including:

  • Supplying Synthetic Inertia: This project explores how batteries connected to inverters can be used to substitute for physical inertia, and to compare these with generation turbines (fossil and renewable) and synchronous condensers.
  • Role of Storage in the Energy Market: This project aims to understand the optimal mix of energy storage technologies, including lithium-ion batteries, pumped hydro energy storage, and thermal storage.
  • Role of EVs in the Grid: This project will develop models to study and evaluate the impact of electric vehicles on the power distribution network.

Candidate Requirements

To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must have a strong academic record and a passion for energy research. They should also be able to demonstrate their ability to work independently and as part of a team.
