Clinical Nurse Consultant Role Overview

Clinical nurse consultants play a pivotal role in transforming healthcare delivery, combining clinical expertise with research and education to drive evidence-based practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead multidisciplinary meetings to review patients with extended hospital stays and identify barriers to timely discharge, ensuring effective patient flow management.
  • Monitor and report on clinical performance metrics, implementing strategies to achieve established key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Develop comprehensive discharge plans for patients with complex needs, ensuring safe transitions from hospital to home or other care settings.
  • Foster collaborative relationships with patients and their families to provide information, address concerns, and support decision-making regarding care and discharge plans.
  • Coordinate interfacility transfers of patients between healthcare facilities, ensuring effective management of clinical and logistical aspects to maintain patient safety and care continuity.

Selection Criteria:

  • AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse is essential.
  • Clinical leadership skills are required, along with the ability to work independently and apply clinical expertise in a consultant role.
  • Proven experience in leading change, developing direction in clinical practice by translating evidence-based research into practice within a person-centred framework.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking in delivering advanced, evidence-based nursing care.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and advanced computer skills are necessary.
