The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer will play a vital role in providing culturally appropriate care for First Nations patients and families at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (SVHM). This position is part of the First Nations Services team, which drives self-determination, co-design, and cultural safety for First Nations people across the organisation.
The successful candidate will work closely with other SVHM staff to provide support to and advocacy on behalf of First Nations patients, as requested by patients themselves. They will also provide culturally specific secondary consultation to clinicians, improving access to care, experiences of care, and health outcomes for First Nations patients.
This is an identified position in accordance with the Equal Opportunity Act, and we encourage applications from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Key Responsibilities- Provide culturally appropriate care for First Nations patients and families
- Work with other SVHM staff to provide support to and advocacy on behalf of First Nations patients
- Provide culturally specific secondary consultation to clinicians
- Improve access to care, experiences of care, and health outcomes for First Nations patients
- Minimum requirement - Certificate IV or Diploma level qualifications in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, or Aboriginal Health Worker Certificate IV, or other qualifications in health or mental health care, or in Community Development
- Of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
- Experience in First Nations health care (mental health care experience an advantage)
- Demonstrated understanding of the Victorian health system and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations
- Current National criminal history check, or willing to obtain
