Job Title: Young People's Rights Advocate At our organization, we are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Solicitor to join our team at The Shopfront Youth Legal Centre. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated professional to make a real difference in the lives of young people. Job Description:

We are looking for a Solicitor who is passionate about advocating for the rights of young people, particularly those experiencing homelessness or significant disadvantage. The successful candidate will work closely with our multidisciplinary team to provide legal representation, advice, and support to clients. They will also be responsible for delivering community legal education and updating legal resources for young people and youth services.

The role involves working closely with Shopfront staff, secondee solicitors, and volunteers, as well as contact with the broader pro bono team and external agencies. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of legal, human rights, and policy frameworks relating to children and young people.

They will be able to handle high-volume and changing workload, and possess excellent file management and organisational skills. A trauma-informed approach and sensitivity towards clients with histories of abuse and neglect are essential.

The Solicitor will also be involved in policy and law reform work based on their expertise, and contribute to the development of resources and materials to support young people and youth services.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years' post-admission experience
  • Expertise in victims support applications (under NSW statutory schemes or similar), criminal law advocacy, or demonstrated capacity to develop further expertise in these areas
  • Demonstrated experience working with clients with high and complex needs, especially those with trauma history, mental health issues, and cognitive impairments
  • A trauma-informed approach and sensitivity towards clients with histories of abuse and neglect
  • Good understanding of legal, human rights, and policy frameworks relating to children and young people
  • Commitment to principles of social justice and social inclusion
  • Ability to handle high-volume and changing workload
  • Excellent file management and organisational skills
  • Initiative, flexibility, and ability to respond to unforeseen circumstances
  • NSW Working with Children Check clearance
