The Advocate for Children and Young People (the Advocate) is the lead for the newly established NSW Office for Youth. The Office for Youth promotes the voices of young people through a centralised pathway for youth engagement, communication, and co-design.

This role of the Advocate is a statutory appointment in accordance with the Advocate for Children and Young People Act 2014.

About the Role

The Advocate provides strategic leadership for the Office for Youth, working to improve the safety, welfare and well-being of all children and young people in NSW by monitoring, understanding, and advocating for their issues as well as working to create holistic and sustainable solutions for their direct benefit.

About you 

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications and experience, including knowledge of child rights and related legislation and issues relating to children and young people.
  • Well-developed understanding of global and whole-of-government principles, policies, challenges and current trends relating to children and young people.
  • Working knowledge of NSW Machinery of Government.
  • Demonstrated ability to use wide ranging oversight and investigatory powers.
  • Experience as an executive leader, including proven strategic and business planning skills.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills.
