Disability Rights Advocate

At the Australian Centre for Disability Law, we seek highly motivated legal advocates to assist with a range of civil law matters. This is an unpaid position.
We are a specialist community legal centre that assists people with disability and their associates through strategic legal advocacy and advice.
The ideal candidate will be in their fourth year or above and have completed their Practical Legal Training component as volunteers at our Surry Hills office.
Responsibilities- Assisting clients with enquiries over the phone
- Providing referrals for people with disability and their associates
- Supporting caseworkers with advices and administration tasks
- Casework support, which can include:
- Drafting and filing disability discrimination complaints
- Conducting research on relevant laws and policies
- Managing files and maintaining accurate records
- Attending conciliations, mediations and hearings as needed
Research and involvement in law reform submissions and community legal education are also key components of this role.
The successful applicant will possess strong communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently as part of a team.
Requirements- Students in their fourth year or above; students seeking to complete Practical Legal Training component as volunteers
- Interest or experience in social justice and human rights issues
At least 2 days per week for a minimum of 6 months. This is a face-to-face role.
