About the Role
The Director and Deputy Registrar of the Magistrates Court is a key leadership position within the ACT Government, responsible for providing strategic direction and support to the ACT Courts registry staff. This includes providing expert guidance on legal matters, exercising statutory powers, and engaging with key stakeholders to advance the functions of the ACT Courts.
Key Responsibilities
- Exercise jurisdiction to hear and determine matters under the Court Procedures Rules 2006 and other legislation, ensuring the efficient management of civil and criminal cases.
- Provide authoritative legal advice to ACT Courts staff on a range of matters, including policy implications and legislative amendments.
- Lead the development and implementation of programs, practices, and procedures to support innovative and efficient operations of the ACT Courts.
- Represent the ACT at external operational meetings, fostering collaboration with court user groups, professional bodies, and government agencies.
- Initiate, plan, and conduct research projects to inform strategic decision-making and improve court operations.
- Contribute to building the capability and professionalism of the ACT Courts organization.
- Maintain accurate records and files in accordance with the Territories Records Act 2002.
Requirements
This position requires a high level of expertise, strategic thinking, and leadership skills. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the ACT Courts' functions and the ability to provide expert guidance on legal matters.
