Job Description

The Justice and Community Safety Directorate ACT is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Magistrate to join our team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exercise the functions of a Magistrate of the Magistrates Court of the Australian Capital Territory, as arranged by the Chief Magistrate.
  • Have wide jurisdiction under the Magistrates Court Act 1930 and other legislation, including with respect to adult and children's criminal matters, care and protection, civil matters including family and personal protection orders and commercial leases, industrial criminal and civil matters, and coronial inquests.
  • Be committed to a judiciary that is reflective of the broader community that it serves.
  • Be able to work independently and as part of a team to achieve the goals of the Justice and Community Safety Directorate ACT.

Requirements:

  • Have been a lawyer for at least five years.
  • Be under the age of seventy years.
  • Meet the selection criteria outlined in the Magistrates Court (Magistrates Appointment Requirements) Determination 2009.

What We Offer:

  • Remuneration, allowances and entitlements set independently by the ACT Remuneration Tribunal.
  • Other terms and conditions may be set by the Executive at the time of appointment.
