Position Overview
The Australian Government Department of Defence is seeking to fill the role of Aviation Safety Assurance Officer (ASAO) within the Directorate of Initial Airworthiness. This position is integral to the Design Organisation Approval (DOA) team, which plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and compliance of Military Design Organisations and Military Production Organisations engaged in defence aviation. The ASAO will be responsible for a variety of assurance functions, which include:
- Performing oversight and assurance evaluations of Military Design Organisations, focusing on the continued airworthiness of aircraft designs;
- Conducting assurance assessments of Defence Military Production Organisations;
- Sampling evidence and evaluating compliance with established regulations;
- Reviewing applications for various authorisations issued by DASA, which encompass individual, organisational, and product approvals.
The Directorate of Initial Airworthiness (DIA) embodies the vision of 'Capability First, Safety Always', which underscores our commitment to managing safety risks effectively within Defence aviation. The DIA-DASA contributes to this mission by:
- Developing and disseminating initial airworthiness policies and regulations;
- Certifying Defence aviation systems;
- Supervising design and production organisations.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We are looking for a qualified engineer who is dedicated to promoting aviation safety within the Defence sector. As an ASAO, your role will significantly impact aviation safety outcomes. Experience in the design, production, or management of safety-critical systems in the aviation industry is highly beneficial, along with familiarity with type certification and initial airworthiness principles in both civil and military contexts.
In this role, you will leverage your extensive experience to evaluate organisational performance and identify safety risks. Practical experience in assessing safety risks or exposure to aviation safety is strongly preferred. You should be methodical in your oversight activities and possess a keen attention to detail. Professionalism and confidence in providing high-quality advice to senior engineering managers and key stakeholders are essential. Knowledge of the Defence Aviation Safety Regulations (DASR) and/or Aviation Safety Management Systems (ASMS) will be considered advantageous.
