Animal Care Specialist

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Animal Care Specialist to join our team. As an essential member of the team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical compliance while supporting the needs of researchers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care and husbandry for a variety of animals, including nutrition, hygiene, enrichment, and environmental monitoring.
  • Monitor and report on animal wellbeing; maintain precise records.
  • Support cleaning and maintenance of DAFF & OGTR-certified areas, including cage cleaning, preparation, and sterilisation.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet daily objectives; weekend and public holiday roster participation may be required.
  • Support research staff and assist other team members as needed.

Requirements

  • Completion (or progress towards completion) of a TAFE Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent qualifications in Animal Studies, Animal Health, Veterinary Science or Animal Technology.
  • Demonstrated experience in animal handling and care of laboratory animals, particularly rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs, and sheep.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated record-keeping skills with high attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and organisational skills.
  • Competence in using databases and Microsoft Office.

Working Conditions

This position is based full-time at a university campus, with typical hours of 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM (start times can be adjusted to accommodate individual availability).
