Aviation Meteorologist Job Description

The role of an aviation meteorologist is to provide critical weather information and forecasts to support safe aviation operations. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for maintaining a suite of products and services for aviation users, preparing and issuing forecasts and warnings, and contributing to forecast policy development.

Meteorologists in this role will work with a team to provide consistent services, liaise with customers and service partners, and provide briefing services to support decision-making.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain a suite of products and services for aviation users, including TAF, GAF, AIRMET, SIGMET, Aerodrome Weather Briefing, Wind Shear Warnings, Aerodrome Warnings, Ditching Reports, Search and Rescue forecasts, and FIFOR.
  • Contribute to the development of forecast policy and collaborate with other meteorologists to ensure the provision of a consistent suite of services.
  • Produce and issue forecasts and warnings from the Brisbane or Melbourne AFC for low-level aviation clients, including forecasts for international airports.
  • Liaise with customers and service partners and provide briefing services to support decision-making.
  • Develop skills in scientific, technical, professional and personal areas by attaining forecasting competencies, learning customer requirements, contributing to aviation projects, and participating in the performance development scheme.
  • Mentor more junior staff as experience allows, providing guidance on forecasting and customer requirements.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Basic Instruction Package for Meteorologists (BIP-M) qualification as a minimum.
  • One year of experience in an operational meteorological service delivery environment is desirable.
  • Maintain Aeronautical Meteorological Forecaster competency.

This role requires shift work and regular periods off the roster to assist in projects or customer engagement activities to improve the effectiveness of Aviation Meteorological Services.
