Disaster Management Forecaster

As a key player in Suncorp's Disaster Management team, you will play a vital role in forecasting weather impacts to support our customers and communities through Australia's most challenging events.

You will monitor, analyze, and communicate weather developments, contributing to preparedness, response, and recovery strategies across the business. This includes working closely with disaster management specialists, operational teams, and external partners to provide accurate and timely information that helps keep people safe and informed.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with monitoring, analyzing, and summarizing observational, forecast, and warning products related to severe weather, thunderstorms, flooding, fires, and tropical cyclones.
  • Supporting the development of hazard-based outlook products that provide lead time ahead of significant hazards impacting business, operational, and customer functions.
  • Contributing to the collation of flood analytics and assisting with interpreting hydrological data under supervision.
  • Supporting the communication of significant weather and natural hazard risks across short, medium, long, and seasonal timeframes to inform Disaster Management operations and broader business awareness.
  • Assisting in producing insight packs and scenario modeling to inform customer impact assessments and support a coordinated approach to event escalation pathways.

Key capabilities required for this role include:

  • Critical and analytical thinking to interpret forecast data and identify potential impacts.
  • Prioritizing tasks effectively when managing multiple activities, especially during events.
  • Seeking guidance to solve problems, breaking down complex information into simpler parts.
  • Demonstrating curiosity and initiative when exploring data, trends, or alerts.

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • A degree or near completion in Meteorology, Hydrology, Geography, Environmental Science, or similar.
  • A basic understanding of Australian weather systems, flood modeling, and climate data.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills.
  • An interest in disaster management, insurance, or emergency services.
