Overview

Who we are

The Strategy, Performance and Engagement Division delivers strategic departmental services such as stakeholder engagement, governance, planning, reporting, risk management, media and communication, and crisis/emergency management. We provide support to the minister, executive and business areas through advice on portfolio strategy, including developing, embedding and driving the department's strategic purpose, objectives, priorities, vision and values. The Chief Strategy Officer leads the division, working across the department to embed and assure strategic capability, helping staff deliver our strategic priorities and to prepare for the future.

The Communication and Media Branch delivers integrated communication services to the department and our ministers/' offices. We partner to achieve business objectives and outcomes through evidence-based, integrated communication and media services for industry, community and business.

The Head of Media and Corporate Communication will work closely with the Head of Strategic Communication, Design and Engagement ensuring joined up communication solutions across the branch. As a Senior Public Affairs Officer Grade Two, the position will have responsibility for management of at least three EL2/SPAO1 direct reports. This is a new leadership position in the branch and will play a key role in implementing a new service delivery and operating model, advocating for change, and leading the strategic and cultural shifts needed to operationalise the changes.

The Job

We are seeking leaders who are comfortable with undertaking transformational change to build a high-performing, inclusive and positive team culture. The role requires strong media and communication skills, strategic insight, and the ability to manage high-pressure, sensitive situations. Having a background in media, social or digital media, corporate communication, and using data analytics in your communication planning, will be viewed favourably. Highly developed leadership skills, including experience in managing multidisciplinary teams within the communication discipline, will be required to ensure strategic oversight and delivery of communication efforts aligned to the department/'s policy and program priorities.

Key duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

- deliver contemporary communication and media strategies and activities, identifying reputational risks and ensuring timely mitigation to protect brand and reputation
- monitor emerging communication and media issues, trends, and sentiment relevant to government and departmental priorities, and using this data to inform communication activity
- advise the secretary and executive on organisational communication priorities aligned to emerging Government, political and corporate issues
- provide media and social media support to the ministers/' offices and the department
- manage the operation of their teams, including overseeing the budget, procurement and all planning and reporting
- drive performance to achieve outcomes in a fast paced and challenging environment
- establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including ministers/' offices, senior executive, across government and all areas of the department
- contribute to the building and maintaining of a strong organisational and team culture.

Please note:

- This role may require work to be performed out-of-business hours and in response to a 24/7 media cycle and crisis communication
- The merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
