The Role

An APS 6 Media and Communication Officer in the Defence Media team supports Defence to deliver against Ministerial and Government strategic communication priorities. This role works within a team that is the main interface with media organisations and is at the forefront of responding to media enquiries and planning for major Defence announcements and activities. As our work supports the Defence media cycle and includes international stakeholders, rostered after hours work, including on weekends, is required, paid under overtime arrangements.

About our Team

The Defence Media team within the Media and Information Disclosure Branch supports the Department of Defence's media, communication and public affairs objectives. The Media and Information Disclosure (MID) Branch is responsible for day-to-day media operations across Defence. MID Branch brings together media, public affairs, social media and digital media services to ensure the department's messaging is clear, consistent and high quality.

Our Ideal Candidate

The role will suit someone with the ability to:

  • Provide specialist advice to stakeholders on the design, development and implementation of a range of internal and external communication and media products and activities.
  • Perform research, and analyse information and risks, and capitalise on opportunities to produce the most effective communication and media products and activities.
  • Identify communication and media risks and opportunities within the business environment and take account of these in planning, decision-making and priority setting.
  • Build and sustain effective relationships with stakeholders to deliver agreed business outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively and negotiate effectively with stakeholders and subject matter experts to deliver agreed business outcomes.
  • Employ understanding of the strategic environment and priorities within Defence to deliver communication and media products and activities.
