About The Healing Foundation
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healing Foundation is a national organisation that elevates the voices and lived experience of Stolen Generations survivors, their families, and their communities.
We work closely with survivors and communities to create environments for survivors to tell their stories and drive their healing. We are committed to the recognition of the Bringing them home report and the realisation of the rights outlined in the report for Stolen Generations and descendants.
We are governed by a Board of First Nations Directors, a Stolen Generations Reference Group, a Youth Reference Group and are led by a First Nations Executive. With our work informed by the Stolen Generations sector – organisations that provide direct support to Stolen Generations survivors in communities across the country.About the Role:
The Media & Communications Advisor will support The Healing Foundation's media and communications activities to strengthen the organisation's profile and advocacy work. This includes assisting with media planning and engagement, developing culturally appropriate communications, and supporting campaigns and events. The role also involves monitoring media coverage, ensuring compliance with policies, and preparing regular updates for senior staff.
About the Role:
The Media & Communications Advisor will support The Healing Foundation's media and communications activities to strengthen the organisation's profile and advocacy work. This includes assisting with media planning and engagement, developing culturally appropriate communications, and supporting campaigns and events. The role also involves monitoring media coverage, ensuring compliance with policies, and preparing regular updates for senior staff.
We are seeking an experienced media advisor with strong communication skills, who is highly organised, collaborative, and committed to culturally centred practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing and implementing media and communications initiatives, ensuring alignment with our overall objectives and smooth delivery of tasks.
- Draft and review media content and communications materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support the integration of communications activities and advice.
- Lead and/or assist with proactive media engagement for key campaigns ensuring positive public positioning.
- Provide advice and coordinate responses to media inquiries, including briefing CEO and/or Board Chairperson.
- Support the development and execution of high-profile media initiatives, contributing to the achievement of strategic communications goals.
- Monitor and track potential reputational risks and escalate issues to senior leadership as required.
- Monitor media coverage and emerging communication trends, providing updates and recommendations to senior team members, to enhance effectiveness.
Experience, skills and attributes:
- Knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and Stolen Generations contexts.
- Experience as a journalist or in media, public relations or communications roles (agency or in-house).
- Strong organisational and project coordination skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities.
- Existing media relationships or ability to build them quickly.
- Ability to work well under pressure and independently, whilst also contributing to broader project objectives or organisational priorities.
- High attention to detail, especially in media interactions, messaging and cultural appropriateness.
- Strong writing, editing and content creation skills across media releases, social media, newsletters and websites.
- Proven experience in media and issues management, including briefing senior leaders.
- Commitment to culturally safe and respectful practices.
- Collaborative and proactive approach to teamwork and stakeholder relationships
