Gardener Part-time Temporary with a Possibility of Permanency

Details: Imagine starting your day among the sweeping lawns of Lanyon Homestead, the quiet charm of Mugga-Mugga Cottage, or the timeless elegance of Calthorpes House. These are not just gardens – they are living, breathing reflections of Canberra’s cultural heritage. As a Gardener with the Cultural Facilities Corporation (CFC), you’ll be part of a team that nurtures these spaces, ensuring they remain vibrant, welcoming, and true to their historical roots.

This is a role for someone who finds joy in working outdoors, who understands the rhythm of the seasons, and who sees gardening not just as maintenance, but as storytelling. You’ll be entrusted with the care of landscapes that have witnessed generations, and your work will help shape the experience of every visitor who walks through these historic grounds.

You’ll be joining a collaborative and passionate horticulture team, working alongside visitor engagement staff, curators, and our facilities teams, contributing to the preservation and presentation of some of the ACT’s most treasured sites, and supporting public programs and events that bring history to life.

We’re looking for someone with hands-on experience in horticulture, ideally in public or heritage gardens. You’ll be comfortable using garden machinery and tools, and confident in your ability to work both independently and as part of a small, dedicated team. A horticultural qualification is desirable, but what matters most is your practical knowledge, your enthusiasm, and your respect for the cultural significance of the places you’ll be caring for.

This is more than a gardening job – it’s a chance to contribute to the ACT’s cultural legacy. You’ll be part of an organisation that values diversity, inclusion, and innovation, and that’s committed to creating remarkable experiences through arts, culture, and heritage.

If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and help shape the future of Canberra’s historic landscapes, we’d love to hear from you.

We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people with diverse thoughts, lived experience, and perspectives can thrive and contribute their unique talents to the ACTPS and ACT community. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, people with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, veterans, younger and older workers, and people with diverse genders, sexes and sexualities to apply.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:

- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in maintaining public gardens, preferably within a historical or heritage context.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in propagation and cultivation techniques.
- Relevant technical knowledge and practical experience in horticultural maintenance, including the operation of tractors, chainsaws, mowers, power tools and chemicals and their safe operation.
