Job Description

National Parks and in the South West Region include Yalgorup, Wellington, Greater Preston, Wiltshire-Butler, Dalgarup, Forest Grove, Blackwood River, Wooditjup, Yelverton, Whicher, Leeuwin-Naturaliste, Scott River, Hilliger and Tuart Forest. The Ngari Capes Marine Park stretches along the west coast from Geographe Bay in the north to Flinders Bay near Augusta in the south. The South West Region’s key service deliverables include nature conservation, parks and visitor services, sustainable forest management, fire management, and land‑use planning. The region’s headquarters is based in Bunbury. Services are also delivered via the Blackwood District, located at Busselton with work centres at Margaret River, Nannup and Kirup, and the Wellington District, located at Collie with a smaller work centre at Harvey.

Under limited (Level 5) or minimal (Level 6) direction of the District Manager, the position is responsible for coordinating the implementation of Wellington district works programmes, including:

- Preparation and implementation of the annual schedule of works for the district;

- Assisting with the delivery of the operational aspects of fire management, conservation, parks and visitor services and sustainable forest management programmes in collaboration with district officers responsible for these programmes;

- Managing district fleet and work centre infrastructure;

- Managing the Sustainable Forest Management programme (Level 6);

- Managing the district’s road and bridge inspection, repair and replacement programmes (Level 6);

- Managing the Conservation Employee workforce;

- Liaising with stakeholders and community in relation to departmental outcomes;

- Responsible for reviewing and monitoring all aspects of workforce health and safety in the district and coordinating and facilitating training of work, health and safety obligations.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should address the following four criteria. These should be addressed in no more than four pages in total.

- Considerable (Level 5) or substantial (Level 6) experience in natural resource management including environmental, recreational, fire, forest and reserve management, with a preference for training and management experience in the operational work of natural resource management across multiple work centres.

- Demonstrated (Level 5) or considerable (Level 6) experience and high‑level leadership, supervisory, organisational, works programme planning, and human resource management skills, including an ability to promote staff development, deal with contentious issues and improve performance, empowering staff to achieve agreed outcomes.

- Evidence of high‑level oral communication and interpersonal skills and considerable experience in effective liaison and negotiation at a range of levels including other government agencies, industry, stakeholders, Aboriginal groups, community special interest groups and the media, with evidence of having responded to complex and detailed issues and at Level 6 resolved them.

- Demonstrated (Level 5) or considerable (Level 6) experience in and knowledge of administrative and financial management, including budget preparation and expenditure control.
