**Where you'll be working**
Health Protection NSW works to prevent exposure to, and minimise impact of, infectious and environmental hazards. HPNSW works closely with public health units in local health districts in the development, implementation and evaluation activities to protect public health.

**About this role**
Reporting to the Chief Health Officer, Health Protection NSW is responsible for surveillance and public health response in NSW including monitoring the epidemiology of notifiable infectious diseases and taking appropriate action to prevent, control and minimise the impact of these diseases. It also provides public health advice and response to environmental issues affecting human health.

The One Health Branch focuses on the strategic response to human health impacts of diseases transmitted from the environment, including foodborne, animal-borne, vector-borne diseases and related incidents. The Branch works in close collaboration across Health Protection NSW branches.

The Manager, Public Health Preparedness Unit is in Health Protection NSW (HPNSW), within the One Health Branch. The Manager leads a team of public health professionals in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of policies for the prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of public health threats and incidents in NSW. Collaborators include with the Public Health Network, NSW Health Ministry of Health, pillars and local health districts, the Australian Government, external NSW Government agencies, health professional organisations and other key stakeholders.

The Manager provides high-level, synthesized and strategic advice on preparedness for and management of complex public health issues to the Director of One Health Branch, Executive Director of Health Protection NSW, other Directors in the Branch, Chief Health Officer, Minister and other senior officials. The position oversees resource development, providing public health advice, guidance, developing and implementing procedures, and developing and implementing legislation and policy for public health issues in the One Health Branch portfolio, including outbreaks of infectious diseases from food, animals, and the environment.

The Manager will work with managers across Health Protection NSW and the Population Health Division to develop, implement and refine processes and procedures for the protection of public health. This position may be surged to other Health Protection units to meet business needs.

**Selection Criteria**
- Postgraduate qualifications in public health or related discipline, and/or equivalent experience.
- Capacity to lead and engender enthusiasm in a multi-disciplinary team, to delegate effectively and to contribute to the success of others.
- Excellent leadership and negotiation skills with demonstrated experience of working effectively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve outcomes.
- Expertise in investigation and management of complex public health issues, including outbreak investigations.
- High level conceptual and analytical skills, and ability to interpret complex information rapidly and accurately for real-time public health response.
- Ability to self-direct, work under pressure and deliver products within agreed timeframes.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience in producing high-quality writing for policy development, ministerial correspondence, peer-reviewed publication.
