The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) is Australia’s audiovisual archive and is responsible for collecting, preserving, and sharing our cultural heritage. The collection of over 4 million items represents moving image and sound production from its earliest analogue formats to today’s digital media and includes related artefacts and documentation such as equipment, photographs, scripts, props, and costumes.

**The Opportunity**

The NFSA is looking for a highly motivated, emerging professional to join the Conservation Services team as an Audiovisual (AV) Conservation Technician with an interest in audiovisual format knowledge to strategically contribute to the AV Conservation program. The role requires someone with patience, passion to learn the audiovisual preservation, motion picture film repair, and work cooperatively in a technical team. Challenges you will face in this position include ongoing responsibility for rare and fragile material, routine and repetitive work processes, remaining highly task-focused over extended periods, routine manual handling (up to 15 kg) and static (hand and arm positioning) physical processes.

**About the Team**

The Conservation team conducts an extensive work program providing a range of activities for the preservation and ongoing care of the audiovisual, documents and artefacts collection. The team has two streams: AV Conservation who prepare and preserve audiovisual material for digitisation, curatorial and access programs; and the Collection Conservation team who look after the documents and artefacts collection, as well as undertaking a range of collection care programs such as collection assessments, exhibition preparation and condition reporting.

The team provides technical advice regarding access and digitisation requests, undertakes straightforward and complex conservation works and ensures the national audiovisual collection is preserved by maintaining current policies and procedures.

This position is located at NFSA Headquarters in Acton, ACT

The NFSA is looking for several highly motivated and emerging Audiovisual (AV) Conservation Technicians to support the Team Leader, AV Conservation. The AV Conservation Technician will undertake various AV conservation treatments such as preparing film for screening and digitisation, condition reporting and contributing to procedure and workflow development and knowledge sharing. The AV Conservation team has an integral role in providing safe and appropriate access to the AV collection which can lead to variable workloads that are supported by full-time and part-time team members.

In 2021 the NFSA received Federal funding to support a multi-year project to preserve Australia’s audiovisual culture. AudioVisual Australia (AVA) is a commitment to digitise at-risk audio, video and film items held by the NFSA and other National Collecting Institutions (NCIs). This role will contribute to ensuring that at-risk collection materials are appropriately handled and digitised. The Audiovisual Conservation Technician will play a critical part in the preparation of AV materials for the Audiovisual Australia (AVA) Program.

**Job Details**

Under supervision, undertake the following duties:

- Prepare AV collection material, including repair to preservation standards, for internal and external collection access requests.
- Undertake a range of AV conservation treatments including examination and research. Examine and identify content of AV materials in their various formats, to ascertain intellectual and physical content.
- Engage with and provide recommendations for collection material in accordance with NFSA policies such as selection or deselection of AV materials.
- Document collection condition and interrogate data and technical records in Collection Data Management systems and
- Contribute towards updating and developing AV conservation procedures, guidelines and workflows as required.

**Desired Skills and Experience**:
**Qualifications and/or equivalent experience**:

- Tertiary qualifications in cultural materials conservation or museum studies and/or relevant experience working in a collecting institution, archive or audiovisual industry with photographic material is desirable.
