**The Opportunity**
The NFSA is looking for a highly motivated, experienced Audiovisual (AV) Conservation Specialist with a depth of audiovisual format knowledge partnered with administrative skills to strategically contribute to the AV Conservation program. The role requires someone with patience, a thorough understanding of audiovisual preservation, knowledge of motion picture film repair, an ability to supervise, provide training and work cooperatively in a technical team, and experience in preventive conservation practices such as Integrated Pest Management, Chemical Management and other collection format hazards and an ability to seek out and share knowledge with colleagues from various audiovisual disciplines.

**About the Team**

The Conservation team conducts an extensive work program providing a range of activities for the preservation and ongoing care of the audiovisual, documents and artefacts collection. The team has two streams: AV Conservation who prepare and preserve audiovisual material for digitisation, curatorial and access programs; and the Collection Conservation team who look after the documents and artefacts collection, as well as undertaking a range of collection care programs such as collection assessments, exhibition preparation and condition reporting.

The team provides technical advice regarding access and digitisation requests, undertakes straightforward and complex conservation works and ensures the national audiovisual collection is preserved by maintaining current policies and procedures.

This position is located at NFSA Headquarters in Acton, ACT.

The NFSA is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Audiovisual Conservation Specialist to support the leadership team and audiovisual Conservation team at the NFSA. This role will support the Team Leader, AV Conservation and AV Conservation Coordinator for maintaining the conservation lab supplies and training new AV conservators. The position will undertake straightforward through to complex AV conservation treatment, support, train and develop staff and support the team to develop and maintain policies and procedures.

In 2021 the NFSA received Federal funding to support a multi-year project to preserve Australia’s audiovisual culture. AudioVisual Australia (AVA) is a commitment to digitise at-risk audio, video and film items held by the NFSA and other National Collecting Institutions (NCIs). This role will contribute to ensuring that at-risk collection materials are appropriately handled and digitised. The Audiovisual Conservation Specialist will play a critical part in the preparation of AV materials for the Audiovisual Australia (AVA) Program. This role will work collaboratively with other team leaders in the Conservation Services team to ensure audiovisual material is provided for digitisation workflows and conservation issues are communicated effectively.

The focus of this role is working with the physical audiovisual collection and ensuring the program meets the strategic and operational requirements of the NFSA. A positive, flexible, forward thinking, service-oriented approach is needed to meet the expectations of this position.

**Job Details**

Under the direction of Team Leader, AV Conservation undertakes the following duties:

- Carry out day to day AV conservation tasks including examination, research, conservation treatment, and identify the content of AV materials in their various formats, to ascertain intellectual and physical content.
- Update and review technical procedures and process documentation.
- Provide technical advice and training to Conservation staff and internal clients.
- Undertake complicated AV technical selections, examinations, and conservation treatment.
- Under limited supervision, carry out and report on conservation projects such as Integrated Pest Management, updating the Chemical register and maintain conservation lab supplies.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of core AV conservation and research works as well as the quality control of the AV works through the team.
