Dating back to 1935, this archive is among the world's oldest. With approximately 125 million annual views, it stands as one of the most accessed cultural collections in Australia.

Currently undergoing a significant transformation phase due to increased Government funding, NFSA is moving towards digital advancement to become the nation's most dynamic and esteemed cultural institution. There is a focus on enhancing the curatorial team, expanding digitization capabilities to preserve the collection at scale, ensuring its accessibility, and fostering workforce stability across physical sites located in Canberra, Mitchell, Sydney, and Melbourne. Business enhancement initiatives are also underway to boost efficiency and reduce manual processes.

The Opportunity

The NFSA's Collection Digitisation Section seeks an Audio Digitisation Specialist familiar with audio preservation and production. The role involves copying, restoring, and preserving various audio formats to meet collection preservation objectives.

Job Description

Job Details

  • Copy delicate audio materials to archival standards, applying conservation and restoration techniques. Maintain and operate playback equipment for safe copying. Engage in digital restoration projects.
  • Research preservation techniques, assist in workflow enhancements, share expertise within the organization, and aid in identifying suitable audio material for acquisition.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated experience in conservation techniques for digitizing audio formats
  • Knowledge of historical audio formats in an archival context and experience with professional audio systems
  • Contribution to developing technical workflows for audio preservation programs
  • Client service skills and ability to prioritize workflows effectively
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Desired Skills and Experience

Preferably, candidates should have qualifications or experience in audio engineering, music, or audio-visual archiving.

Eligibility

  • Australian Citizenship
  • Successful Australian Federal Police National Police Check
  • Potential requirements for Baseline Security Clearance and Working with Vulnerable People registration
