Brisbane, Australia Australian Electoral Commission Full time

**[Note: Temporary Opportunities for Commonwealth Employees Only]**

**Agency Purpose**

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

**The AEC’s values and commitments**

The AEC values and commitments are an essential component of our operating environment and frame how AEC staff work. The AEC's focus is on electoral integrity through the values of quality, agility and professionalism.

**The Team**

We offer a unique opportunity to be part of a passionate team that together deliver world class electoral services at the core of our Australian democracy. We have people, with a wide range of expertise and experience, working in a diverse range of roles, in many locations around the country. Where we are similar is that we all support Australians to participate in democracy - and this is something that we think really counts.

In the months and weeks prior to an electoral event the AEC’s workforce expands exponentially as it prepares for voting day and the weeks following. As a result, the AEC requires temporary support in a range of capacities in order to meet the significant logístical challenges and short timeframes associated with delivering an election or referendum.

These roles may be required to work in a range of operational or corporate settings: both office-based or in warehouse-like facilities known as ‘outposted centres’, which act as the hub for event logistics and count activities.

**The Opportunity**

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) invites you to register your interest for this non-ongoing employment opportunity in Queensland at the EL1 classification in the State Office team.

The QLD State Office team facilitates the readiness of the agency and the proper conduct of the election, upholding the Electoral Integrity Framework. Assistant Directors, Operations work across the state to lead small teams of staff to deliver face to face services, electoral event planning and delivery. Reporting to the Director Operations, you will be an active participant in the broader Queensland leadership team, modelling exceptional behaviours and contributing to our culture, business planning and deliverables.

We are looking for strong leaders who are agile, self-motivated and results-driven to manage state election planning, delivery and evaluation. You will be responsible for leading a team of Team Leaders and Assistant Team Leaders to manage daily operations and to financially forecast, plan and successfully deliver electoral events

You will also be responsible for assisting with the mobilisation of over 100,000 temporary election workforce staff during an election, using your excellent leadership skills to support and manage significant numbers of these employees in the surge workforce.

You will contribute to the development of team objectives for short term tasks and strategic planning for longer-term initiatives, including setting priorities for the work area, maintaining team cohesion, and ensuring quality of outputs for the work area.

Using excellent communication skills, you will be required to manage multiple stakeholder relationships effectively and deliver quality results within tight deadlines. Your work will require you to take initiative, have strong attention to detail and utilise analytical skills to contribute to business improvement strategies.

During an election, you will also need to be responsive and show professional resilience and personal drive to deal with the high demands and volume of work generated at election time.

While the opportunity is currently available based in Brisbane, consideration may be given to outposted locations.
- Skills and Capabilities needed_
- Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise, to empower and motivate others, providing clear direction. Delegating tasks effectively to staff, supporting them with development opportunities and coaching to build high performing teams.
- Ability to work with others and have a strong commitment to building team spirit. Proactively listen to and communicate effectively with others, recognising team member contributions to tasks.
- Adhering to key principles and values, always demonstrating integrity in upholding ethics and values to support the AEC’s strategic direction and best practices.
- Using strong personal judgement when undertaking objectives, demonstrate ability to conduct critical analysis and utilise available information to implement workable solutions; identifying broader interconnectedness across the agency to manage risks.
- Ability to quickly adapt and respond to rapid change. Recognise the need to adjust methodology, communication and interpersonal styles with internal and external stakeholders t
