**The opportunity**:
The Tropical Diseases Group focuses its research on disease caused by “Strep A”, that is, Streptococcus pyogenes, and neglected tropical diseases including scabies and lymphatic filariasis. The Research Assistant will support a combination of laboratory and field-based investigation. Through this, the team aims to explore and test new diagnostic, treatment and control strategies, to better understand the immunology and epidemiology of Strep A and neglected tropical diseases with a focus on the disease burden in Australia and developing countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.

The group is supporting the identification and feasibility of a global Strep A vaccines in collaboration with national and international partners.

There is an entry level role and a mid-level role available, with the opportunity to receive on-job-training and working alongside the Tropical Diseases’ Laboratory Team implementing and developing innovative laboratory-based research. Major group projects include the Australian Strep A Vaccine Initiative, investigation of vaccine
- and infection-induced systemic and mucosal immunity against Strep A infection, and using our Controlled Human Infection for Vaccination Against S pyogenes (CHIVAS-M75) study to assess bacterial pathogenesis and host immunity to Strep A.

**Your responsibilities include**:
Working with immunological assays such as human blood fractionation, whole-blood stimulation, Luminex assays, multi-dimensional flow cytometry, serology
Molecular biology using human tissue and host-derived bacteria including RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, transcriptomics (RNA sequencing, Nanostring)
Performing tissue culture, aseptic technique, microbiological culture
Assisting and contributing to data generation and results analyses for dissemination in publications, presentations
Performing meticulous data entry, continuous maintenance of neat and orderly records, lab books and data storage
Ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies

**About you**:
Honours or Masters qualification in Biomedical or Biological Sciences or related discipline
Demonstrated experience in laboratory-based research, preferably immunology, molecular biology and/or microbiology techniques and a willingness to learn
Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and adaptable to suit the needs of the projects
Demonstrated experience in working in an environment where high attention to detail and corresponding recording/reporting is essential
Proficient computing skills, including data analysis, statistics, spreadsheets, and word processing
Enthusiasm to be part of the Tropical Diseases Group and contribute to the overall objectives and research outcomes
