This is a 12 month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 4, 2025 with possible extension and/or permanency

School of Alternative Learning Settings (SALS) - Kununurra

The SALS program was originally established in early 2019 to target a specific cohort of students who had demonstrated signs of complex behaviour and/or physical aggression and would benefit from a short-term, intensive intervention program. At the commencement of the 2022 academic year the program was consolidated as a stand-alone school. SALS delivers specialised activities and learning programs that build students' social skills and self-regulation in environments designed to effect positive and lasting change in their behaviour. The program has the capacity to provide access to specialist allied health professionals, services and programs.

There are 12 SALS sites located in the metropolitan and regional education regions of Western Australia. Each setting accommodates up to 10 students who are provided with an intensive, individualised program of support, within the learning opportunities of small groups, while they continue their education. There is a strong focus on developing students' social skills and ability to self-regulate. Learning and engagement is flexible, co-designed with students, culturally responsive and supports self-determination and interpersonal connection.

The Role

The role of the Program Coordinator is essential to coordinating a responsive and effective model of onsite student support that is aligned with the SALS model of program and service delivery. The successful applicant will ideally lead a team of teachers, student support officers, a youth transitional officer and school psychologist to deliver a responsive social and emotional learning program and integrated curriculum through project-based learning that supports student engagement and ultimately leads to successful transition back to the student's enrolled school, new school or alternate pathway. The Program Coordinator should draw on their interpersonal acumen to provide educational leadership, coaching, and mentoring to SALS staff, continuing to build their capacity to ensure coordination of wrap-around services and support is undertaken in collaboration with the referring school, parents, and relevant agencies that result in success for the student.

You will ideally have skills in maintaining professional boundaries while adopting a student-centric approach that aids in contributing to positive student outcomes. Your high-level communication skills and ability to build and maintain strong community and education partnerships will be highly regarded. In addition, you will ideally be able to display skills in crisis management and the development of personalised student de-escalation strategies. In collaboration with the principal and members of the executive team you may have the opportunity to inform strategic planning, leading the school vision, core values and guiding principles.

SALS staff benefit from working in a collaborative team environment, sharing common goals and resources in supporting students, schools, and parents. In collaboration with the Associate Principal, the Program Coordinator should identify and broker appropriate support agencies and educational alternatives to support students excluded or at risk of being excluded. The Program Coordinator would lead and coordinate the involvement of services available at a system and local level. They will ideally contribute to ensure quality support is provided for students and families in making informed choices about educational provision for their child, as well as work with school staff to develop pathways and transition support for students.

The successful applicant may be required to travel, within the Kimberley education region, across our school and to Perth for professional learning, including overnight stays and air travel. This role may also require the successful applicant to hold and maintain a valid WA driver's licence. For 2025 and 2026, eligible teaching staff at the Kununurra SALS site will receive an approved Attraction and Retention Incentive (ARI) allowance of comparable value to CTP allowances received by eligible teaching staff employed at other schools in the area. All functions of Statewide Services support successful outcomes for all students. This is achieved through a focus on better integration of services with schools, students, families, and external service providers; supporting schools and networks of schools to deliver high-quality teaching and learning in every classroom; and creating expanded opportunities for students to develop the academic, personal and social competencies they will need for participation in the workforce and society of the future.
