ABOUT US

The Salvation Army is a Christian movement and one of Australia's largest and most-loved charities.  We believe in doing good that transforms lives and futures for the better.  It is this belief which drives us to find new ways and places where we can make a difference. From times of personal crisis to moments of national grief, we are always here — providing support, safety, community, and opportunity.

Why this role matters

The Salvation Army (Salvos) is one of Australia’s largest providers of alcohol and other drug (AOD) programs including withdrawal management, residential and non-residential rehabilitation, and harm reduction programs. Salvos services go beyond addressing the core issues and challenges associated with problematic substance abuse and provide participants a place of hope, compassion, and dignity to recover safely.

About the role

We are seeking a values-driven and proactive Harm Reduction Worker to provide assertive outreach and harm reduction services to individuals and groups.

Reporting to the Harm Reduction Van Coordinator, this is a casual position based in St Kilda, Victoria. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the SCHADS Award Level 4.

Please note the successful candidate will work on a set roster, including weekday and weekend shifts.

You will successfully
  • Work with the team to help ensure services provided align with The Salvation Army’s (TSA) alcohol and other drug (AOD) model of care and TSA policies and procedures.

  • Provide sterile injecting equipment to people who inject drugs.

  • Provide naloxone and overdose training opportunity to all clients accessing the outreach service.

  • Ensure clients are receiving integrated, holistic, culturally sensitive, responses to their needs.

  • Help develop and maintain strong relationships with the police, ambulance, and other professionals to ensure the safety and well-being of clients.

  • Support the Community Health Nurse in the provision of primary health care.

  • Identify unmet needs and provide referrals and information for mental health, housing and other relevant services.

You will have
  • Certificate IV (or equivalent) in the application of AOD interventions or the four competencies required to work within the AOD Sector or willingness to obtain within a set time frame.

  • A valid Victorian Drivers Licence (desirable).

  • A current Victorian Working With Children Check.

  • A high level of knowledge of the health and AOD harm reduction needs of people who use substances and experience intoxication, people who are experiencing homelessness, people who engage in street-based sex work or people experiencing discrimination, stigma or issues accessing health services due to other reasons.

  • A working knowledge of the relationship between mental health and AOD issues.

  • Excellent communication skills.
